An Introduction to RENEW 2000

We are now entering a significant moment in human history, the year 2000, the beginning of a new millennium. Much of the world is stopping to assess where we are and where we are going. Pope John Paul II has asked " Everyone.... to do as much as possible to ensure that the great challenge of the year 2000 is not overlooked". These are the words of the Pope in his Apostolic Letter, As The Third Millennium Draws Near. John Paul II has offered many challenges and recommendations for this unique moment in history. It is a time to reassess our past, evaluate our present, and prepare for the future. It is a time to recommit ourselves to God and to the transformation of our world. It is a time to celebrate.

Thus, it is important for us to set aside some time in both our own personal and communal journeys to look at where we have been and where we are going. RENEW 2000 provides a pastoral approach to both the preparation for and the celebration of the Great Jubilee.
